BMW 900GS TEST

Dirt Bike Magazine tests the BMW 900GS on some back grounds in the pine trees of Southern California. We first got a look at this bike about a month ago on a ride with BMW’s new Superbike racer JD Beach, who did some pretty amazing things on it. Now that we have one of our own we get it; this bike is a big leap forward over the F850GS. If you’re not familiar with BMW’s middleweight adventure line, it can be a little confusing. In 2019 the F850 was a complete redesign over the older 800. It was the most dirt oriented middleweight twin of the day. It had a new 798cc parallel twin motor that was manufactured in one of BMW’s Asian facilities. It was lighter and had better suspension than the previous 800, which had been around since 2012.BMW has come a long way in its off-road capability. They had to; even though these guys have been in the adventure bike game longer than anyone, they’ve recently spawned some pretty intense competition from other manufacturers who take off-road performance very seriously.
Up front, we have to say that the standard, unmodified power power delivery is wonderfully smooth. If you’re looking for something with a wild surge that has the front wheel coming up and your eyes watering, this isn’t it. The BMW has massive torque and has such a smooth delivery that it conceals that 105 horsepower rating. We rode it back to back with a KTM 890, which feels completely different. That bike is noticeably more powerful but it hits harder and demands more from the rider. On a dirt road, the unaltered KTM is going to spin wildly until you engage some level of slip control. The BMW, on the other hand, is perfectly controllable without doing that. The power output is smooth, controllable and super easy to use.
That’s a good thing, because BMW’s traction control is still fairly limited. With everything enabled, the F900 has five ride modes; Street, Rain, Dynamic, Enduro and Enduro Pro. Each has its own mix of output, throttle response, anti-lock braking and Dynamic Traction Control (what BMW calls “DTC”). You can also go into submenus to cook up your own recipe. The default setting for Enduro Pro has disabled rear brake anti-lock, slightly reduced throttle response and a moderate amount of traction control. As it turns out, that reduction in engine output mixed with the bike’s naturally smooth power delivery is perfect for the dirt without any traction control at all. Even in its most minimal setting, DTC comes across as an engine miss. In deep sand, it can actually bring you to a halt. For a quick elimination of DCT, BMW has supplied a dedicated button that you can use on the fly.

    Very nice bike. I just don’t understand why if you want to go off-road why not buy a true dirt bike? It will be 150-200 lbs lighter and 7- 9 k cheaper. And if you want to be able to ride to your trails there are several choices, KTM EXCs come to mind and both Honda and Yamaha have equivalent models. All far better dirt bikes at way less money and with that money saved you could pick up a used street bike that will do that half better too.

      YES...... my BETA 430 RR S............with the rally tank will take you anywhere OFF ROAD....... this BMW is a nice bike BUT....... too much money........and like you said...... it can NOT compete on real trails/singletrack, with a true dual purpose like my BETA.

      How is it “better” and more “capable”? Of course the T7 cost less money. It doesn’t come with cruise control, a acro pipe, heated grips, braided steel lines, quick shifter, keyless ride, Brembo brakes, torque control assist, and an alarm. Oh and it has less torque, horsepower, and is 700ccs.

    Not impressed in the least. Its not a contest of looks cool its function. For the cost of bike and 8000 for brc engine then finishing product. The bang for price is extreamly absent. Not only that im certian you could start with a mid 80s 500 keep the factory engine and frame and build somthing equally as fast if not faster for the money. Since when did better not include the price tag? Dont get me wrong bike looks good and is probably fun just not practical. Just tired of seeing these conversation bike all over, makes me realise how few actual 500 riders their are anymore.

    If you lower the gearing, properly adjust the idle, add a GET ECU and some MX-Tech suspension, you're going to have to find some very slow music for the follow-up review. Maybe Willie Nelson on .75x speed?

    If you look at the power numbers they are 5-hp up from a carbureted 2005 CRF 250R and theoretically should be faster on the top end thanks to DOHC and a 6 speed gearbox. Granted it isn't 2020 CRF or KTM 250 spec but for someone looking for an inexpensive leisure bike to just enjoy occasional trips to local tracks with it is spot on. I mean when you consider the cost of used Japanese or European MX bikes that may or may not run as good as their new plastics might suggest they should, this is a brand new machine for about the same price. If you are looking for an inexpensive weekend warrior MX bike for solely having fun the Kove and Kayo 250 MX models are going to be your best bang for buck for track use without having to remortgage the homestead to afford a new ride. I think that as time goes on the gap between Chinese MX and the rest of the world will begin to close dramatically. The biggest hurdle they have to overcome is lack of power because their frames and suspension have already caught up to the likes of the rest of the pack IMO. I have thrashed around on a Kayo 250 and to be fair it was comparable to an early 2000s CRF250r in power with a better chassis in my opinion. I wouldn't mind throwing a leg over a Kove at a track and riding it back to back with the Kayo just to see which is the better bike coming out of China.

    Acts like a great and powerful bike with good handling. I rode the YZ 465's for years and the CR 500 Husky.. This looks like I could handle this even at 76 years of age. That said, real men don't have spoke wraps.....pretty lil' yellow ones..... No offense, Mark. I will ride a 4-stroke but find they are about as exciting as kissing my sister.....two-strokes forever! The sound is glorious!
